Socio-political events of the 1990s were greatly influenced by revision of true nature of the Independent State of Croatia (NDH) and its legacy. Since the forming of the Republic of Croatia, previously celebrated anti-fascist events have erased from the historical calendar. The Serb National Council has taken upon itself to mark the anniversaries of the tragic mass killings or deaths within the concentration camps during the Second World War so that the victims are honored in the most respectable way. Serbian county, town and municipal councils annually commemorate the suffering and exodus of Serbs which occurred during the last war. The commemorative manifestations represent the integral part of our activities in the field of culture and education which raise public awareness.

The annual events are commemorated on the basis of memorial criteria and the degree of social or political negligence of the historic event or place. Apart from organizing manifestations on yearly basis, the Serb National Council participates in the organization of single, occasional events such as Aleksandra Zec or Josip Reihl-Kir remembrance days. Certain number of manifestations is commemorated by the county councils of the Serb National Council supported by the logistics and political support of the SNC.

Whenever possible, we tend to introduce the new innovative ways of commemorating the events and contribute to the new model of remembrance culture, taking into consideration necessary critical approach regarding the current state practices as well as the legacy of the former Yugoslav period. This model requires certain interdisciplinary correlation, i.e. co-operation of actors from different socio-political spheres and a level of inclusivity or solidarity insistence in remembering all participants of historical events. The culture of remembrance is not solely aimed at the Serbs in Croatia and Serbia or their descendents but also it is an intrinsic part of the Serb self government in Croatia and the Croatian society on the whole.

The concept of commemoration always tends to have individual approach clearly stating the names and surnames of victims, their places of deportation or death as well as the names of their benefactors. What gives authentic, modern and educative feel to these manifestations are original documents, historical evaluations, trips down local memory lanes and artistic imagination.
