The Youth Network of Serbs in Croatia (oMreža) was established at the end of 2013 in Zagreb as a volunteer civil initiative whose goal was to encourage young persons to become more actively involved with the society around them, so that they could use their potential for common prosperity.
At the start of 2018 oMreža joined the SNV, where it functions as an independent and separate unit dealing with young persons by strengthening their engagement with political, economic, social, cultural and social trends.
As part of its regular activities, oMreža gives recommendations to young people about employment, participation in seminars and educations, organizes study trips within the country and abroad, as well as forums and talk shops, socializing and language courses; it actively engages in social-humanitarian work, drafts projects targeting youth, and regularly informs the target population via its Facebook page about the events relevant for the Serb community, about employment opportunities and about oMreža’s own activities.
In 2017, oMreža started developing the concept of “work actions” – voluntary, engaged, locally oriented actions with multiple goals. The main goal was to raise young people’s awareness of problems of particular local communities, acquaint them with living conditions of Serbs in economically neglected areas and to encourage them to become involved and give their own contribution. Also significant is their effort to encourage local communities themselves to become active in preserving secular and sacral buildings, and to show solidarity and care for community members who are old, frail and in an economically unfavourable situation. Finally, the goal of work actions and their immediate effect is to show care for people, objects, and the living traces of the existence of Serbs in particular areas.
oMreža closely collaborates with organisations Youth of European Nationalities (YEN) and Conference of European Churches (CEC). This cooperation has resulted in participation in several international projects: in the “Minority Safe Pack” initiative, in projects “Crossing Rivers”, “Minority Messengers”, “Step up!”, “Standing up for minority rights” etc.
Joint work has enabled young Serbs from Croatia to get to know many other European countries: Belgium, Netherlands, France, Romania, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Montenegro, Serbia.
oMreža consists of a working team of 10 people, whose role is to lead, organize and initiate projects and actions.
